We hed our Harvest show on Saturday September 7th, we defied the weather and it was enjoyed by all. Co-inciding with the Annual Hat Festival gave us reason to compliment the produce with our headwear.
Outside, on East Street, the Charity Plant Fair run by Ann Brown, Vivienne and Gordon Smith raised well over £100 for cancer support group ‘Stepping Out’ before the afternoon rain drove people to shelter. Inside the Hall a fine array of exhibits demonstrated that we had all been hard at work in our gardens, kitchens and wherever paintings, photographs and handicrafts are produced.
The wet summer had put a damper on the number of Dahlias and Roses entered but this was compensated by the gargantuan marrow grown by Mark Porterfield and creative entries in ‘Christmas decorations made from recycled materials’ from Wendy Thorogood and a record number of entries in the Photography section.
A special mention to frequent exhibitor Pam Tribe for the magnificent intoxicating Ginger Lily, which Cyril Whitlock (good to see you back Cyril) was moved to give a special certificate from The Guild of Show Judges: “awarded as an appreciation of the outstanding merit of this exhibit, and as a tribute to the skill of the exhibitor.”
We were delighted that Mayor Anne Rickard and consort Dave Rickard were able to join us to give out the trophies and rosettes.
Well-deserved overall winner Fiona Graham-Flynn demonstrated her prowess at growing across the range of flowers, fruit and vegetables, whereas runner-up Wendy Thorogood had covered handicrafts and photography to a tee.
Many thanks to everybody who made the day a success, exhibiting, catering, organising, marking etc, but to Anne West, Gill Fitzjohn, Sue Baker and Anne Bark in particular who have devoted many hours to provide another successful show for our wonderful town. Thank you.
