Buckland Monachorum, Devon
Described by Toby Buckland as ‘a plantsman’s paradise’ the 10 acre Garden House includes varied planting styles including the Summer Garden which “is planted in a ‘new naturalistic style’. Sweeping banks of grasses and plants that ebb and flow as if they happened by accident are planned, divided, maintained, and ruthlessly managed. It is a blend of shoulder high grasses and perennials that tempt every visitor to ‘swoosh’ through them.”
Optional visit to Wildside
Described by BBC Gardener’s World as a ‘horticultural visionary’, Keith Wiley was for many years the head gardener at The Garden House where he developed the ‘new naturalistic style’ now refined in his own garden a few miles away. With its manmade hills and valleys, he has created a mosaic of habitats planted and maintained with innovation based on a profound knowledge of plants and their specific requirements. The tree pruning technique to reveal trunks and frame views is another object lesson on how create depth in the landscape.
Keith has agreed to give us an introductory talk. Truly an inspiration.
You can catch up with the Gardener’s World programme featuring Wildside on BBC iPlayer 29 December 2023.
